&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Brutus Coste s-a născut la Ciacova, Banat în 10 februarie 1910.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;După liceu, studiază Ştiinţele Politice şi Economice la Universitatea din Bucureşti, obţinând licenţa în 1933. <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;În 1932 este angajat la Ministerul Afacerilor Externe, urmând în paralel cursurile de Studii Internaţionale din Geneva (1931-1934). <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Ocupă funcţiile de secretar şi consilier de legaţie la ambasadele române din Paris şi Londra, însărcinat cu afaceri la legaţiile române din Washington şi Lisabona (1933-1946). <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;În urma instaurării regimului comunist în România, demisionează şi se alătură Grupului de Români Liberi ce se forma în Franţa. <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;După stabilirea în Statele Unite, devine sfătuitorul diplomatic al Generalului Rădescu, ultimul Prim Ministru legal al României, care organizase Comitetul Românilor Liberi. <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A deţinut funcţia de secretar al Comitetului de Documentare al Refugiaţilor Români, condus de Grigore Gafencu, pe lângă Conferinţa de Pace de la Paris. <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Este secretar general al Organizaţiei Naţiunilor Captive Europene (Assambly of Captive European Nations - ACEN) (1954-1965). <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Între anii 1967 şi până la pensionarea sa în 1976 a fost profesor la Catedra de Ştiinţe Politice şi Istorie Contemporană la Universitatea Fairleigh Dickinson (FDU) din Teaneck, New Jersey. <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A fondat în 1974 organizaţia Adevărul despre România (Truth About Romania Committee) funcţionând ca director tot restul vieţii. <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;În urma unei lungi suferinţe, a decedat în 3 septembrie 1984, la Spitalul Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center din New York. <br>

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Apprehension in the face of all event which appears to be another step toward unprincipled pragmatism prompts this writer to address Your Holiness. I refer, to the reportedly warm reception Your Holiness tendered: to one Nicolae Ceau¬sescu, by the grace of Moscow ruler of Romania. It is bad enough that temporal rulers of the Western world have come to subsidize and bestow prestige upon the oppressors of that East European peoples-thus compounding their earlier guilt toward them. But that the hood! The Catholic Church should follow the temporal rulers on a road that can only lead to moral suicide and ultimately to surrender is beyond the capacity of the captive peoples, or their spokesmen in the free world, to comprehend. <br>


&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;As one who, in a not too distant past, had repeatedly been elected to a lead¬ing position in the Assembly of Captive European Nations, which for many years had widely been regarded as the representative voice of the silenced peoples of East Central Europe, and as a Romanian, I may perhaps qualify as one of, such spokesmen and accordingly speak up with utmost frankness: <br>

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;In shaking the bloodstained hand of Nicolae Ceauşescu, Your Holiness has caused painful disappointment and deep discouragement to the overwhelming majority of the Romanian people and particularly to the one and one half million Unites whose Church was brutally suppressed in 1947, and whose five bishops and hundreds of priests died the death of martyrs in communist prisons without ever betraying their faith. <br>


&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Le no advisers and experts tell Your Holiness that the crimes against the Romanian people belong to another era and are the responsibility of others than the present rulers. The plain truth is that Nicolae Ceauşescu already belonged, at the time of the suppression of the Unite Church, to the Kremlin-picked top-hierarchy of the communist party. It is he who ten years later was to lead the murderous campaign conducted against the Romanian peasant to force him into the neo-serfdom of the accursed Kolkhozes. <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;And let no one invoke Christian forgiveness in justification of a shocking "realism". Forgiveness follows repent¬ance and redeeming acts. How and when did Ceauşescu repent his crimes and redeem himself? Did he ever rehabilitate those of the victims who survived long years of hellish imprisonment? Did he punish the murderers and torturers of hundred of thousands of good Romanians, men and women, at the infamous Danube-Black Sea Canal and in the many scores of jails of extermination? Did he concede to the Romanian people at least those crumbs other East European tyrants handed down to their subjects in the form of some material improvements less terror and a modicum of spiritual and intellectual freedom? Can complicity with Leonid Brezhnev in deceiving the West with spurious gestures of independence, and an increasingly stalinist internal order, complete with the most ludicrous personality cult, qualify as repentance? <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;These lines are written with a heavy heart by one who, although not a catholic, had hoped to see the Holy Seat boldly pointing the way to the statesmen of the West instead of eagerly competing with them in short-sighted expediency. They are written in prote5t but also in prayer. May the good Lord be merciful and guide Your Holiness toward the task that cries for fulfillment: moral leadership in the battle for the rights of Man and nations, and for the preservation of human freedom and decency, a battle we are, right now, loosing. <p>

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Prof. Brutus Coste, ca diplomat a apărat interesele unei Românii, nedreptăţită şi frustată. Remarcăm abilitatea cu care a obţinut in 1941, - când avea funcţia de Însărcinat cu Afaceri Externe al României la Washington - o declaraţie istorică de la Cordell Hull Secretar de Stat şi Summer Welles Subsecretar de Stat ai Guvernului American, prin care se recunoştea drepturile României asupra Basarabiei şi Bucovinei de Nord. <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Personalitate recunoscută a exilului, a fost o prezenţă vie în mijlocul comunităţii româneşti. În anii când incertitudinea şi lipsa informaţiei domina exilul, prin conferinţele şi întâlnirile sale, Prof.  Brutus Coste a dezvăluit adevărul despre soarta României şi l-a făcut cunoscut prin memorandumuri şi proteste colective, autorităţilor americane.<br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Era în contact permanent cu Departamentul de Stat, cu presa, cu uniunile muncitoreşti americane – ALF/CIO – care aveau o poziţie anticomunistă. <br>
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Temele conferinţelor erau de mare actualitate tratând aspecte cruciale ale timpului. Aşa a fost conferinţa, „Politica externă a regimului comunist din România: o politică de independenţă autentică sau o contribuţie la succesul strategiei europene a Rusiei sovietice?”, prezentată la al 13-lea Congres al Societăţii Academice Române ţinut în Washington.
