In 1936 se înscrie pentru doctorat în teologie la Facultatea de Teologie din Bucuresti, urmând în acelas timp si cursurile Facultătii de Litere si Filozofie.
Dupa două semestre urmate la Facultatea de Filozofie din Berlin, revine în tară, ocupand postul de redactor al gazetei "Libertatea" dela Orăstie, iar în 1940 este ales Presedintele Uniunii Nationale a Studentilor Crestini Români.
In 1941 alege calea exilului, fiind pentru un scurt timp secretar al Mitropolitului Visarion Puiu, la Viena si apoi la Paris si timp de cinci ani, după al doilea razboi mondial, profesor de istorie antică si limba franceză în Italia, la un colegiu Romano-Catolic.
Sosit ca emigrat in Statele Unite la 17 Iulie 1950 a preluat redactia gazetei “SOLIA” la Cleveland, Ohio. La Congresul Episcopiei Ortodoxe Române din America - tinut la Chicago în 2 Iulie 1951, a fost ales Episcop. Hirotonirea întru Arhiereu a fost făcută la 27 Aprilie 1952 în biserica "Pogorârea Duhului Sfânt" din Philadelphia, iar la 4 Iulie 1952 Episcopul Valerian a preluat conducerea spirituală a Episcopiei Ortodoxe Române din America.
Realizările celor 32 de ani de muncă în ogorul Domnului, ca Episcop si apoi Arhiepiscop sunt si vor ramane marturie peste veacul veacurilor.
Pensionat prin propria-i dorintă, la vârsta de 70 de ani, în Iunie 1984, a trait ultimii doi ani si jumătate în Portugalia, unde la 28 Ianuarie 1987, a parasit cele pamantesti, intru Domnul.

In 1936, he enrolled in a PhD. Program at the School of Theology in Bucharest, attending at the same time philosophy and literature courses.
After two semesters of study at the School of Philosophy in Berlin, he returned home, and took up the position of editor in chief at “Libertatea” in Orastie. In 1940, he was voted President of the National Union of Romanian Christian Students.
He became an exile in 1941. For a little while, he worked as Secretary for His Eminence Visarion Puiu in Vienna and Paris. After the Second World War, he worked for five years as Professor of classical history and French in Italy, at a Roman Catholic college.
He immigrated to the United States on July 17 1950, and became editor of “The Herald”, in Cleveland, Ohio. He was made Bishop at the Congress of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate in Chicago, on July 2 1951. He was ordained as Hierarch April 27, 1952, at the “Pogorarea Duhului Sfant” Church in Philadelphia. On July 4 1952, Bishop Valerian became the spiritual leader of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America.
His accomplishments over 32 years of working for God and humanity, first as Bishop and then as Archbishop are and will remain living proof for centuries.
Retired on his demand at the age of 70, in June 1984, he lived out the last two years of his life in Portugal, where he passed away on January 28, 1987.
