Biserica a devenit si primul refugiu pentru noi veniti, deoarece in acei ani guvernul canadian nu avea un sistem de ajutor pentru emigranti. Membri bisericii ii adaposteau pentru inceput, apoi prin colecte saptamanale, le asigurau bani pentru mancare si chirie.
La aniversarea primului an de existenta a Parohiei "Sfantul Gheorghe" a avut loc, "Sfanta Liturghie", urmata de rugaciuni de slava si multumire catre Bunul Dumnezeu care le-a implinit marea dorinta, de a avea un loc de inchinare. Apoi impreuna au participat la agapa frateasca.

The church also became a refuge for newcomers, as during those years, the Canadian government did not have as much support for immigrants. Parishioners took in immigrants, sheltering them for a while, and then collecting money for them, to help them with food and rent.
At the first year anniversary of the parish, Reverend Nicolae Zelea officiated the Holy Liturgy, followed by prayers and thanks to God for fulfilling their desire to have a place of worship. Afterwards, parishioners gathered for a communal feast.
